Today the Australian Greens expressed shock and dismay at the ABC's axing of Bananas in Pyjamas - an iconic program with 380,000 viewers nationally.

"While the ABC is expected to do more with less, management have made a series of very unfortunate decisions of late," said Greens communications spokesperson Senator Scott Ludlam.

"Frying B1 and B2 lets down young viewers and slashing the Hobart television production unit in November last year with one hour's notice to staff did not help the ABC fulfil its Charter obligations.

"The ABC is a vital component of Australian media and culture. It needs to be adequately funded to deliver the news, investigative journalism, and the children's educational programs we need and love.

"The Australian Greens urge ABC management to reconsider this extremely unfortunate decision."
