Government handouts to auto-industry must guarantee local jobs

Any further handouts of tax-payers money to the automotive industry need to come with local job guarantees for South Australia and a commitment to making the clean, green, electric cars of the future, the Australian Greens have said.

"Golden handshakes made with tax-payers' money need to come with strict guidelines," South Australian Greens Senator, Sarah Hanson-Young said.

"In the past we've seen handouts given with no guarantees given to keep jobs in local communities.

"In this difficult export market, government money needs to support the local manufacturing workforce through job guarantees and the future-proofing of our auto-industry.

"Linking the investment of government money to creating the clean, green, electric cars of the future will help to set South Australia up as the electric car capital of Australia.

"The Greens are standing up for South Australia and the thousands of people who rely on the manufacturing sector for their livelihoods."
