Greens support National Tree Day
Friday 26 July 2013
Greens MP for Southern Metropolitan region, Sue Pennicuik is supporting
Planet Ark’s National Tree Day at a local school today and at Elwood Canal
and Gardiner’s Creek on Sunday.
National Tree Day is Australia’s largest tree-planting and nature care
event. Each year around 200,000 people take part in National Tree Day
events at thousands of sites organised by councils, schools, businesses,
and communities across the country.
"Today I will be planting trees with students from Malvern Primary School
and on Sunday I’ll be helping out at Elwood Canal and Gardiner's Creek."
Ms Pennicuik said. "I'm looking forward to meeting up with lots of local
residents who also like to get outside, connect with nature and improve
their local environment."
Participation in National Tree Day is fun and helps address important
environmental issues like the loss of habitat for native wildlife, soil
salinity and erosion, as well as being good for individual and community
health.
"Aussies are spending more and more time inside and on-screen,
disconnected from the natural world, but research studies from here and
overseas show there are real benefits associated with spending time
outside and in contact with nature," says National Tree Day Manager Debbie
Agnew.
It's also a milestone event this year, as Planet Ark prepares to plant the
20-millionth seedling since the event began in 1996. "That’s a great
achievement," Ms Pennicuik said.
