O'Farrell driving wrong way on greenslip insurance reform
Ahead of tomorrow's CTP roundtable the government's issues paper supporting their greenslip insurance reforms shows that, while the legislation has been delayed, they remain committed to reforms that will see thousands of injured road users receiving dramatically reduced benefits.
Greens NSW MP David Shoebridge said:
"The government remains committed to a scheme that will slash the benefits payable to almost 90% of the people who are injured a result of another driver's negligence.
"If this becomes law it will be both expensive and unfair - the worst of all worlds for NSW motorists.
"The government has clearly had a closer look at the viability of their new administrative scheme and abandoned any firm promise of reduced premiums.
"The promise to reduce premiums in the scheme being removed undercuts the Government's stated justification for the reforms.
"This package protects insurer profits and fails to propose any mechanism to claw back excessive insurer profits and return them to motorists.
"It is good to see the government engaging in a roundtable debate, but it is unfortunate that this issues paper is more about government spin than a careful assessment of the pros and cons of the proposed changes.
"The Greens will continue to engage with the government on this Bill and look to ensure that if changes are made then they protect existing entitlements and fund any new benefits from cuts to excessive insurer profits," Mr Shoebridge said.
