Community win at Helms forest block

Community vigilance has won a reprieve from imminent logging for Helms forest block near Nannup.

"Community action and vigilance has alerted the Conservation Commission to check whether parts of Helms Block should be protected as old growth forest," said Greens MLC, Giz Watson.

"The Conservation Commission's decision to accept the nomination and undertake a formal assessment within the coupe is great news and vindicates ongoing community claims of the value of this significant area of forest," she said.

The Forest Products Commission (FPC) had given the all-clear for logging to start, now at the eleventh hour and thanks to community action, there will be a further assessment.

"This decision by the Conservation Commission is another demonstration of why the FPC cannot be trusted with our forests" she concluded.
