In the face of many pundits writing off The Greens following last
Saturday's local government election, the confirmation today that the
party has retained the directly elected Mayoralty of Byron Shire
confirms that the Greens are still standing strong in local government
across NSW.

Greens MP and Local Government spokesperson David Shoebridge said:

"Congratulations are in order for the Greens' Mayoral Candidate for
Byron Shire, Simon Richardson.

"With the highest primary vote and strong support from across the
communityTthe Greens have clinched the Mayoralty with a solid margin
of 800 votes.

"As directly elected mayor for Byron Shire Simon will have a strong
Greens Council ticket to continue to press for an environmentally and
financially sound council

"As always our opponents in other political parties, and some of the
usual suspects in the media, have been quick to draw negative
conclusions from the election outcome.

"Today's result, together with the results that will come in the next
few days as the counting progresses in other council areas, will
confirm that the Greens retain a strong footprint in local government
across this State.

"This is a time to thank those supporters who make any of our
campaigns a success and to commend to the team from Byron Shire for
all their hard work," Mr Shoebridge said.
