Media conference: 12 noon Wednesday 5 September outside Bendigo CFA (cnr Hargreaves and Chapel Streets Bendigo)
"The Black Saturday fires came within 2km of Bendigo CBD. With $41 million cuts to CFA staff and training and more to follow, can Ted Baillieu guarantee Bendigo's safety?" said Greens MLC Colleen Hartland in Bendigo today.
"Bendigo is a big city with a huge range of industrial and residential fire emergencies each year, including toxic fumes from cars and modern buildings."
"We already ask so much of our volunteer fire fighters; more than we have a right to ask. They contribute billions of dollars worth of services to Victoria each year, not to mention the lives that are owed to them."
"It just sickens me that the Premier would consider sending fire fighters into lethal situations with less training and fewer support staff."
"I am drafting Greens legislation to help firefighters, including CFA volunteers, if they contract cancer from contact with fumes when they are protecting Victorians. I hope to introduce the new laws to Parliament later this year," said Ms Hartland
