New data released today from the 2011 census shows public transport and
bike are the fastest growing commuter options for Melbourne.
"Bike and bus are the fastest growing commuter options, growing three
times as fast as car use, "said Victorian Greens Leader Greg Barber
"Bus to the train station grew fastest of all, however only about 12
percent of train users got to the station by bus. We need more buses that
link directly to scheduled trains, so people can leave their cars at home
instead of overflowing railway car parks."
"We have 39% more people travelling to work by bus, 36% more on bikes, 33%
more on trains and 28% more on trams since the 2006 census. The
percentage of commuters travelling by car has actually dropped in real
terms, as the increase in car use is less than the overall increase in
people commuting to work,"
"Just as the bicycle commute is surging, Ted Baillieu cuts the bike budget
to zero. He should bring the bike budget back," said Mr Barber
