Victorian Greens Leader Greg Barber says the oversight of wildlife killing
permits is so bad the DSE should stop issuing them, after today's damning
Auditor-General's report.*

"The DSE has powers to monitor and enforce permit conditions, but they're
not using them. They're meant to keep decent records, but information is
inaccurate or missing. They are meant to keep tabs on who is given
permission to kill wildlife, but they usually renew the licence without
checking," said Greg Barber.

"A permit to cull a dozen kangaroos, wombats or wallabies could lead to
hundreds being killed and no one would ever know."

"As the Auditor-General put it, 'DSE cannot accurately quantify and track
the number of licenses, permits and authorisations it issues'," said Mr
Barber.
