Ride2Work Day: Greens support calls for safer cycling in Fishermen's Bend
16 October 2012
Sue Pennicuik, MLC for Southern Metropolitan region, will be participating
in Ride2Work Day to support the need for safer cycling in Fishermen's
Bend.
Who: Sue Pennicuik MLC, Greens member for Southern Metropolitan Region
What: Ride to Work day
Where: the corner of Lorimer and Ingles Streets, Port Melbourne
When: Wednesday 17 October 7.45 AM
"It is great to see the Westgate Punt celebrating its first year of
operation as a seven-day-week service and being used by so many cyclists
to cross the Yarra River, saving them a 13km road trip." Ms Pennicuik
said. "However cyclists have to deal with dangerous conditions in
Fisherman's bend where there are gaps in the Bay Trail."
"The number of cyclists using this route to ride to work has been steadily
increasing over the last few years," Ms Pennicuik said. "I am concerned
that there have been a number of incidents and close calls along Lorimer
Street due to a mix of heavy traffic and cyclists."
"The government needs to urgently complete the Bay Trail between the
bicycle Punt and Southbank / CBD to make it safer for existing cyclists
and to encourage more people to use it," Ms Pennicuik said.
