Media Statement: Lynn MacLaren - Public call for cycling louder than ever

The public call for cycling is louder than ever before, said Lynn MacLaren MLC, Greens spokesperson on transport, following this morning's RAC breakfast forum.

E-bikes, helmets, road and city design topped the agenda when Johan Diepens of Mobycon in the Netherlands, spoke to a packed room of WA decision-makers.

"Perth's growing number of advocates for an ambitious world-class cycling network were enthralled as Mr Diepens mapped out how to transform our city.

"While this Government has launched the first Bike Network Plan since 1996, 100 km of principle shared path remains unfunded, as the RAC pointed out."

"Just this morning, I have received another three bike blackspot reports. The first one points out poor infrastructure at a Lake Monger intersection where a lack of visible signage leaves a bike crossing blocked by motor traffic. Others, as we all too frequently see, highlight a lack of maintenance, where tree branches hang low over paths. 

"If cyclists want an obstacle course, there are plenty of places for mountain bike riding. Cyclists in the suburbs need to know they can ride safely and conveniently to work, to stores and to schools. A little bit of maintenance goes a long way. 

"As today's West points out, cycling is not just for joy riders. Cycling is a real transport option that many more people would take up in a heartbeat if it was both more safe and more convenient. Perth's growing population can't afford increasing traffic snarls - increasing public transport and cycling is the way forward.
