Labor and Liberal go to water on political donations reform
A Greens Motion calling on the State Government to introduce legislation to reform State political donations laws during this term of Parliament was watered down by the old parties in Parliament late tonight.
The Motion calling on the Government to "introduce" legislation was dropped in favour of "investigate" legislation.
"Sir Humphry would be proud!" said Greens Parliamentary Leader Mark Parnell.
"The old parties are backing away from reform despite SDA Boss Peter Malinauskas and the Labor Party rank & file calling for it, and Isobel Redmond's recent announcement that the Liberal party is already working on a similar policy.
"This is deeply disappointing.
"We have a rare window of opportunity for real reform this year with all the key players saying they want it, but neither Labor nor the Liberals prepared to make the first move.
"Clearly the ALP Parliamentarians are out of step with their rank and file members and the Liberals know they want reform, but don't know what it looks like."
The Greens will continue to pursue electoral reform next year in Parliament.
