The Victorian government and opposition joined forces to vote down a
Greens move to release a public health and air emissions report related to
the Alcoa Anglesea coal mine and power station, last night in Victorian
Parliament.
"The Baillieu government has damaged the solar and wind industries, but
coal mining is so special, they gang up with Labor against the Greens and
the Anglesea community."
"The government and Labor don't agree with me on releasing this report,
but it could be that we all agree on one issue, which is that hundreds of
millions of dollars in subsidies to Alcoa in cheap electricity are
unlikely to continue. Alcoa uses renewable energy overseas. It remains to
be seen whether they will stick around when the coal power subsidies
disappear."
Mr Barber moved a Private Member's Bill to remove Alcoa's special
exemption from freedom of information laws. This provision was recently
used by the EPA to deny his request for release of a health and air impact
assessment for the Anglesea coal mine and power station.
