New planning legislation sells short Mill Hill heritage
Media Release - 28 November 2012
Greens NSW Planning & Heritage spokesperson David Shoebridge yesterday
joined Waverley Greens Councillor Dominic Wy Kanak and members of the
local community to discuss recent changes to the NSW Planning system
which will have a detrimental effect on heritage conservation areas.

Greens NSW Planning & Heritage spokesperson David Shoebridge said:
"This legislation could have been a lot worse, but at the last minute
the government responded to the concerns of the community and advanced a
number of amendments to address the growing opposition.
“The Bill as initially drafted would have produced genuinely disastrous
outcomes and gutted almost all controls in key planning documents called
Development Control Plans (DCPs).
“However the Bill still provides that performance controls such as
height, setbacks, floor space ratio controls and building footprints are
no longer subject to merit assessment, meaning councils will have little
or no ability to moderate development to protect people’s views,
sunlight and general amenity.
"It makes no sense at all to remove a resident's right to have their
own amenity taken into consideration when someone is building next door
to them.
This government is taking rights away from local community and
delivering for the developer lobby – pure and simple," Mr Shoebridge
said.
Waverley Greens Councillor Dominic Wy Kanak said:
"Waverley has numerous places of heritage significance which are under
threat from the developer driven O'Farrell government.
"Places such as the Mill Hill Conservation Area in Bondi Junction have
a rich history that we must pass on to future generations.
"I will support local residents in making sure the Liberal councillors
on Waverley Council don't just toe the party line and deliver for the
developer lobby rather than serving the heritage protection interests of
our community," Mr Kanak said.
