Nuclear energy in NSW will be toxic for the O'Farrell govt
Media release: 22 November 2012
The Parliamentary Accounts Committee of the NSW Parliament has turned it's back on safe and economically viable renewable energy technologies to resurrect the nuclear energy debate in NSW, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.
Dr Kaye said: "Nuclear energy is dangerous, uneconomic and retrograde.
"Having already rubber stamped uranium exploration in NSW the O'Farrell government is now flirting with nuclear power.
"I doubt that Committee Chair Jonathon O'Dea's constituents in the electorate of Davidson would appreciate a nuclear power plant in their backyard.
"Parading nuclear energy as a viable low emissions energy source while the O'Farrell government continues to devastate the renewable energy sector is deeply contradictory.
"Despite the ink barely having dried on community submissions to the O'Farrell government's long awaited Renewable Energy Action Plan, nuclear energy is again being dragged out for debate.
"NSW has the potential to lead the country in developing and exporting wind and solar energy technologies. Instead the focus is on to resurrecting the deeply unpopular idea of nuclear energy development in NSW.
"Wind and solar technologies are cheaper to develop and avoid the threat from toxic long lasting waste products and the unavoidable connection to nuclear weapons.
"The Premier has stated that the O'Farrell government does not support nuclear power generation in NSW. Chris Hartcher must now rule out a review of nuclear energy development in NSW and focus on fostering a jobs rich, clean energy sector in NSW," Dr Kaye said.
