MEDIA ALERT: Greens NSW to launch Heritage Policy
Under the threat of the O'Farrell government's developer driven planning Green Paper, The Greens NSW are launching their new heritage policy, acknowledging the unique status of Aboriginal heritage and the historic role of activism in heritage protection in NSW.
When: TODAY 11.30 AM, Friday 31 August
Where: Cadman's Cottage, The Rocks
Who: Green bans legend Jack Mundey, Greens NSW Heritage spokesperson David Shoebridge, Greens Member for Balmain Jamie Parker, Greens City of Sydney Councillors Irene Doutney and Chris Harris, members of the community.
Media comment by Greens NSW Heritage spokesperson David Shoebridge:
"NSW governments have historically failed to take adequate steps to protect this state's heritage and have instead delivered for developers," Mr Shoebridge said.
"The O'Farrell government's developer-driven planning Green Paper will take us down exactly the same path of trashing local heritage and local communities.
"The heritage system in NSW is largely one of managed destruction. This is particularly true when it comes to Aboriginal heritage.
"It is essential that Aboriginal people have control over decisions made about their heritage and cultural, the preservation of which is of ongoing benefit and importance to all Australians.
"It is only because of local activism by residents groups and people like Jack Mundey that iconic places like the Rocks and the QVB are still standing," Mr Shoebridge said.
