Greens MLC Greg Barber has succeeded in his call for a secret health and air impact assessment of Alcoa's Anglesea Power Station and Coal Mine to be tabled in parliament, but the government may still try to to avoid letting the report become public.

"The government has been sitting on this report since 2008," said Greg Barber

"Last year they made a decision to continue coal mining in Anglesea for up to 100 years."

"They had it in their hands when the Anglesea residents were calling on the government asking for a health assessment, but even the existence of the study was a secret."

"Why should this be secret?  Alcoa may have a sweet deal on power and coal, but they don't yet own the air.  Why should they own information on the quality of the air?"

"I was pretty shocked to learn for myself, almost inadvertently, a Heath and Air Impact Assessment had been conducted and kept secret he whole time the licence was being renegotiated."

"Anglesea mine and power station are one tenth the size of Hazelwood, but they emit 300 times as much sulphur dioxide and 1100 times as much fine particulate matter," said Mr Barber

The government did not oppose the motion to produce the documents, but stopped short of promising to produce them on the next date of sitting.
