Greens MLC Colleen Hartland has welcomed the COAG decision to include 10c
drink container refunds as an option for national consideration, noting
that the Coca Cola scare campaign against litter reduction had failed.
"I was relieved to hear that 10c refunds remain on the agenda as national
discussions continue to the next stage - a formal impact assessment of
different options" said Colleen Hartland MLC.
"Some of the options are different types of 10c refund schemes, including
what the environment campaigners and I call the 'best practice' option."
"They will also study the ineffective voluntary schemes recommended by the
companies that create the litter."
"This is turning out to be a contest between the big drinks companies who
see branded litter as free advertising and the local residents who are
just sick of it."
"Once Coke's ridiculous scare-campaign adverts started hitting the papers
the community really smelled a rat and they responded beautifully with a
well coordinated email campaign to the Ministers who were set to attend
the meeting. I hope it cost Coke a fortune, the litter-bugs."
"My Greens legislation for a 10c refund scheme in Victoria is based on the
best practice option; I have delayed the debate and vote in Victoria
pending the outcome of the COAG national discussions," said Ms Hartland
