Minister must act now to stop super trawler

"Fisheries Minister, Norman Moore, must protest immediately to prevent the Dutch super trawler, Margiris, from pillaging WA waters," said Green MLC Giz Watson.

In answer to my question in Parliament yesterday the Minister acknowledged he is 'concerned about the potential impacts on localised depletion of target fish species and any downstream effects this may have on the State's commercial and recreational fisheries'.

"Concern is not enough, urgent action is needed," Ms Watson said.

"Minister Moore has not responded to the Commonwealth's plan to allow the super trawler to fill its quota of 18,000 tonnes of fish from the ocean of WA's coast," she said.

"This super trawler is already heading for our coast, after having wreaked havoc on coastal fisheries in Africa, and the Minister has been aware of this for almost two weeks but has failed to contact the Commonwealth to express his concerns," she said.
