Victorian Greens support Marriage Equality rally
Victorian Greens spokesperson for lesbian, gay, bi-sexual, transexual and
inter-sex (LGBTI) issues, Sue Pennicuik MLC today voiced her support for
the Equal Love rally in Melbourne tomorrow.
"The Greens fully support the equal love campaign and commend the tireless
efforts of everyone involved in the campaign for marriage equality, equal
adoptions rights and ending discrimination in work and education," Ms
Pennicuik said.
"I introduced the Greens Marriage Equality Bill 2012 into the Victorian
Parliament on 6 June and Greens bills have also been introduced in the
South Australian and Tasmanian parliaments.
"It's time to remove marriage discrimination forever. It is a basic human
right for every person to have their love recognised by marriage, if they
so choose, regardless of their sexuality or gender identity," she said.
"The Greens have two Marriage Equality bills* before the federal
parliament, aiming to remove the discrimination introduced in 2004 to the
federal Marriage Act by the Howard government," said Ms Pennicuik.
"All federal parliamentarians will have the opportunity to support
legislation to end discrimination once and for all.
"If the federal Marriage Equality bills fail, the Greens will bring on
their Marriage Equality bills in state parliaments.
"I will be attending the Equal Love rally in Melbourne tomorrow, as I have
every year, along with my colleague, the Federal Member for Melbourne,
Adam Bandt.
"Please come along to show your support for Marriage Equality," Ms
Pennicuik said.
