Greens MLC Colleen Hartland has congratulated the WA opposition leader
Eric Ripper, who has produced an identical bill to her own Victorian Bill
for a 10c refundable deposit on bottles, cans and cartons.
"I always said the 10c refund idea should cross party lines, so I am
delighted that WA Labor has endorsed the Victorian Greens model for
container deposits."
"The WA Labor Bill is almost word for word identical to mine,* so it's
either very spooky, or a great example of practical recycling."
"When I introduced my Bill in Victorian Parliament, I created a model with
even greater benefit than the existing South Australian scheme. It is
administered by the State and run by the recycling industry, with a big
emphasis on Reverse Vending Machines. It would pay for itself and create
a new public fund for recycling initiatives."
"Bills based on mine have previously been tabled in Western Australia by
Greens MLC Robin Chaple and in the Senate by Greens Senator Scott Ludlam."
"I am happy to work together across party lines with any MP who wants to
promote a 10c deposit scheme. My aim is that each of the states should
work together to create a national system."
Ms Hartland's Bill is awaiting debate in Victorian Parliament, pending the
outcome of a Parliament Inquiry.
