Petition and protest call for end to Game Council
MEDIA RELEASE - 14 October 2011

Ahead of a peaceful protest in Olney State Forest tomorrow near Lake Macquarie, Greens MP David Shoebridge has tabled a petition in NSW Parliament calling for the abolition of the Game Council and an end to recreational hunting in NSW.

"The Game Council is a pro-hunting lobby group that should not have statutory support or public funding to promote a gun culture in NSW," Mr Shoebridge said.

"Yesterday I tabled a petition signed by almost 800 residents of NSW calling for the abolition of the Game Council and an end to recreational hunting in NSW state forests.

"The Game Council was established in 2002 as part of a deal between the Shooters Party and the then Labor government.

"The Game Council was supposed to be self-funding and engage in effective and professional feral animal control.

"Instead it has been a constant drain on public funds, and promotes cruel and ineffective and cruel methods of feral animal control such as pig dog hunting.

"Both the Nature Conservation Council and the Invasive Species Council have expressed concern regarding the lack of credible evidence supporting recreational hunting as method of feral animal control.

"The Greens are calling for the abolition of the Game Council and for effective and humane feral animal control in NSW," Mr Shoebridge said.

David Shoebridge will join Lake Macquarie Greens Councillor Hannah Gissane and local residents for a picnic protest in Olney State Forest tomorrow Saturday 15 October.
