Roads Minister can end Laman Steet deadlock
MEDIA RELEASE - 13 October 2011
The Roads Minister Duncan Gay should break the deadlock between the community and the council in Newcastle by temporarily assuming the Roads Act, according to Greens NSW MP David Shoebridge.
"Minister Gay can do both the community and the council a favour by temporarily assuming the Roads Act. This would override council's previous decision and allow for a proper assessment to be done of the risk these trees pose," Mr Shoebridge said.
"Although seven of Newcastle City's thirteen Councillors voted to remove the trees, a clear majority of nine now want believe that they should not be removed before all the evidence is in.
"The community and council both want a proper risk assessment to be done on these trees, the only thing standing in the way is a technicality.
"The Greens are calling on the Roads Minister to use his authority and do everyone in Newcastle a favour, especially the Laman Street figs.
"There appears to be goodwill in the government to address this issue and it can only be hoped the Minister will intervene," Mr Shoebridge said.
