Stop Exporting Cruelty, Stop Exporting Aussie Jobs

The Greens have renewed calls to ban live animal exports, a move they hope will gain more traction following the revelations on the ABC's Four Corners program 'A Bloody Business' last night.

Greens Animal Welfare and Employment spokesperson Tammy Franks says the trade is horrendous and that she, like thousands of Australians, was sickened and disgusted by the callous cruelty she witnessed.

"The export of cruelty must end now and so too the exporting of local jobs," she said.

"Over 1000 meat processing jobs were lost to overseas in 2010 alone.

"We could be processing these animals on shore, humanely, and both the animals and our local industry would reap the benefits."

Ms Franks said the Greens would next week move a motion in Parliament calling on the Rann Government to take action to stop the cruelty.

"The South Australian Government needs to act now and invest in chilled meat processing, halal abattoirs and export," she said.

"A win-win solution is possible."

"It is expected that Port Adelaide will see major growth in the export of these animals through South Australian docks and this must be prevented in favour of humane, Australian processing."

Last night's program showed that Australian animals are exported long distances overseas to a cruel and horrific demise at the hands of poorly trained and ill-equipped Indonesian abattoir workers.
