Greens MLC Colleen Hartland has called on Labor to withdraw its misleading
letterbox campaign* and to come clean on their failure to get trucks off
residential streets in the West.
"The solution to getting trucks off our streets is to move freight onto
rail and to implement the Truck Action Plan - Labor failed to do both of
these in their 11 years of government and in reality each year the number
of trucks on our streets increased," said Greens MLC Colleen Hartland.
"In government Labor failed to deliver on its freight on rail target of
30% by 2020. Instead, the proportion of freight transported by rail
plummeted from 20 per cent in 2000 to 12 per cent in 2008-09. And the
parts of the Truck Action Plan that Labor committed to fund were road
widening projects putting more trucks on our roads."
"Any person who walks, rides or drives on our streets can see that Labor
failed. Yet, they are doing a letterbox campaign telling people how great
they are on this issue. This is misleading the community. Not one truck
was removed from our streets by Labor."
"Freight moving through our suburbs is set to double within 10 years -
that's double the number of trucks on our streets unless drastic action is
taken to put freight on rail and implement the Truck Action Plan."
"Unfortunately, the coalition government too has failed the West. They
have no freight logistics plan, no freight on rail target, and the Truck
Action Plan is under review. This is despite years of criticising Labor's
failures in this area."
"The Greens have been the only consistent advocates for freight on rail
and I've been on the barricades with the community from the start. Rather
than carping from the sidelines I'll be working with the community, local
councils and the liberal government to make rail freight a real priority."
said Ms Hartland.
