Rann Government Must Act on Homophobia
The Rann Government must deliver a strategy to eliminate homophobia and transphobia, Greens gender & sexuality spokesperson Tammy Franks says today, as a question mark hangs over the future of the only existing State Government funded health service for same sex attracted youth.
In question time today, Ms Franks sought an assurance from the Rann Government over the future of two connected Second Story programs - Inside Out and Evolve - which provide peer education, group work, counselling and referral services for young people who are same sex attracted.
"These essential programs are a vital service for a group of young South Australians who we know to be at high risk of suicide, homelessness, isolation and discrimination," Ms Franks said.
"On IDAHO (International Day Against Homophobia), I am seeking a declared assurance from the Government that these programs will continue to service young South Australians.
"Both Inside Out and Evolve have been changing lives for the better for many years in SA and without them far too many young people will be needlessly isolated and marginalised. The consequences of cutting this service could involve increased suicide, homelessness and other negative outcomes for young people.
"These services offer same sex attracted young people something broader society sadly still does not - a safe space to be who they are, free of discrimination and homophobia. Guaranteeing this basic right should be a Rann Government priority."
