Artificial tanning exposures impossible to regulate
Media release: 16 May 2011
New research (http://j.mp/arpansa1105) from the nation's radiation safety authority shows that some solariums emit UV rays up to six time the intensity of midday sun, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.
('Tanning doses are off colour, study finds' Sydney Morning Herald, 16 May, page 2, http://j.mp/smh110516)
Dr Kaye said: "Solariums are a direct cause of melanoma. This research shows that they cannot be meaningfully controlled by regulation. They should be banned.
"The massive doses of radiation delivered by some sunbeds mean that any regulation based on skin type and age will still leave unsuspecting users at risk of exposure to extremely dangerous levels of UV.
"The NSW government has little choice but to close down solariums to reduce the appalling levels of melanoma they cause.
"The extraordinarily high doses that some machines deliver will increase melanoma risk for most people.
"The public health imperative is to shut this unnecessary industry down," Dr Kaye said.
