WA Greens Water Spokesperson Alison Xamon MLC has attacked yesterday's surprise cut to the Federal rebate for plumbed-in rainwater tanks and greywater systems.

"This cut to the Federal rebate, applicable from the day it was announced, has left householders around the nation who were about to purchase rainwater tanks or greywater systems out in the cold," Ms Xamon said.

"The rebate scheme enabled householders to receive $400 for a plumbed-in 2,000-3,999 litre tank and $500 for a tank greater than 4,000 litres, as well as similar rebates towards installing greywater systems.

"These were important incentives for many householders.

"For a measly saving of $14.5 million over the next three years, it is not as if cutting this scheme is going to plug the Gillard Government's Budget hole.

"This is penny-pinching in the wrong area and short-term thinking, particularly for Perth house holders who have been experiencing unprecedented dry spells.  While the eastern states have been subjected to unprecedented rains WA needs all the help it can get."

"Why cut one small positive step towards addressing household water efficiency when it will ultimately help us to avoid higher future costs for water as a nation, such as desalination?"
