Greens MLC Colleen Hartland says the state budget ensures truck traffic
and pollution, road congestion and crowded trains will continue to be a
reality for the inner western suburbs.
"There simply isn't a public transport improvement in sight for the West
in this budget," said Colleen Hartland. "We've already seen services for
the Altona Loop and Werribee line cut and with only seven new trains in
the budget for the whole network over four years, you can bet the sardine
tin crowding will just get worse."
"The daily nightmare of truck traffic and air pollution for Yarraville
residents looks set to continue with no commitment to complete the Truck
Action Plan."
"One small mercy is that the Westlink road tunnel and freeway through our
suburbs is not funded."
"But it's not enough simply to reject the former government's vision for
the west. The new Premier should have his own plan, and there isn't one."
"Even some improved bus service would relieve a bit of congestion, but
these options go begging in this budget."
"Some basic capital works would help, like a tram connection from
Footscray to the Docklands, or a tram extension from Maribyrnong to
Sunshine and East Keilor."
"I welcome the investigation into a train line to Tullamarine Airport, but
we have lot of catching up to do before we can have any kind of equal
services to the equivalent inner eastern suburbs."
"The west wants a vision for transport that will reduce air pollution,
relieve congestion and allow people to get around quickly and comfortably
without a car," said Ms Hartland
