Skinner purges hospital network boards
Media release: 5 May 2011
NSW Health Minister Jillian Skinner is playing politics with the state's hospital networks with legislation to purge the governing bodies, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye. ('Critics fear purge of hospital boards', Sydney Morning Herald 5 May 2011, p. 4, http://j.mp/smh110505)
Dr Kaye said: "The Minister's first legislation will change the names of state's hospital governing bodies and sack all of their members.
"As the health system prepares for the greatest shack-up in funding in a generation, Ms Skinner has shrouded the future of the hospital networks in uncertainty and destroyed continuity in governance.
"No evidence has been presented to show the boards are inadequate to the task ahead of them.
"The Coalition clearly wants to put their own people on the boards.
"Playing politics with the governing bodies will do nothing to improve health outcomes.
"Changing leadership in the lead-up to the introduction of case mix funding will undermine preparation for the massive changes it will bring.
"The voters expected the new government to sort out some of the challenges facing hospitals, not make it worse.
"The Greens will oppose the legislation when it comes before the Upper House," Dr Kaye said.
