More South Road Car Madness


The Government has today announced a new transport 'concept plan' for the Bedford Park region.


"The Greens strongly welcome any plans to extend rail services," said Greens MLC Mark Parnell.

"The light rail extension to the Flinders Hospital and University precincts is well overdue and makes good sense.

"However, the rest of the concept plan appears to be just pie-in-the-sky, car obsessed madness.

"When I see the Government's plans for South Road I swear I am looking at a video of Los Angeles from the 80's with four or five separate roadways and
ramps running side by side - surely urban transport planning has progressed since then.

"The Government's vision for a continuous South Road will be at the direct expense of local communities and businesses.

"Big roads cut communities in half.  The larger and faster South Road grows, the more that people and local shops will get squeezed out.

"Traffic expands to fill the available space.  The more the Government focuses on building bigger roads at the expense of public transit, cycling and walking, the worse our car dependence, and therefore our traffic problems, will become," he said.
