Why announce sprinkler use today?

Greens MLC Mark Parnell has slammed the decision by the Rann Government to announce a major relaxation of water restrictions the day before the Murray Darling Basin Plan is released.

"What sort of message does this send to upstream States as they begin to grapple with big cuts to irrigators?" asked Mr Parnell.

"While it's sensible to give households more control over their water use, today's announcement of a major cut in restrictions couldn't have come at a worse time.

"Allowing sprinklers again after just one wet winter - while there is still no plan to reduce Adelaide's draw on the River Murray - will not go down well in the Eastern States.

"Like it or not, perceptions do matter. Cuts to irrigators are going to be hard enough to sell as it is without South Australia effectively telling the world the water crisis is over," Mr Parnell said.
