Greens MP Lee Rhiannon speaks at Abortion Rights Rally Saturday

What: Greens MP Lee Rhiannon, who is campaigning for reform of NSW
abortion laws, speaks at National Rally to protest attacks on abortion
rights in Queensland and the US.

NSW Greens MP Lee Rhiannon said:

"It's time that in NSW abortion was removed from the reaches of the
criminal law.

"In Queensland a young couple will soon attend court facing criminal
charges for procuring an abortion under almost identical laws to those
in NSW. 

"Victoria and the ACT have modernised abortion laws and a recent poll
shows community support for such change is strong. 

"A majority of Australians, 57 per cent, agree that women have a right
to obtain an abortion “when they want one”. Only 4 per cent oppose
abortion outright. 

"While a 1971 court ruling by Judge Levine has moved abortion in this
state away from the dark days, abortion is still subject to the criminal
law.

"This rally will send an important message to the Keneally government
that abortion law reform is long overdue and needed now," Ms Rhiannon
said.
