MEDIA ALERT - 27 MAY 2010
NSW Greens MP and Federal Senate candidate meets with breast screening
campaigners
WHAT: NSW Greens MP and NSW candidate for the Senate Lee Rhiannon is
tomorrow (Friday) visiting Lismore, Tweed Heads and Ballina. She will
meet with local health campaigners to accept a petition regarding the
removal of local breast screening services.
WHEN: 12.30pm, Friday 28 May 2010, outside Ballina Hospital.
Greens MP and health spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said:
“While I imagine no woman would actively cherish having a mammogram,
the evidence is in that early detection of breast cancer is critically
important.
"The easier we can make it for women to attend this essential service
the better.
"We know how many demands there are on women's lives. Quarantining
the time to travel to Lismore or Tweed Heads to access screening
services adds a layer of difficulty and may deter women.
"I am looking forward to meeting with campaigners who are working so
diligently to reverse the decision to remove breast screening vans
which service Ballina, Byron Bay, Lennox Head and Casino.
“My Greens colleague Ian Cohen has been actively supporting this
cause, both in and outside of Parliament.
"As health spokesperson and Federal Senate candidate I hope to build
on the excellent work already being done by campaigners," Ms Rhiannon
said.
