EMBARGOED UNTIL 6AM FRIDAY 22 MAY 2010
GREENS SELECT JAN DAVIS AS FEDERAL CANDIDATE FOR PATERSON
Greens member Jan Davis, East Maitland resident and experienced
campaigner, has been selected to stand for the federal seat of
Paterson as the candidate for the Greens in the upcoming Federal
election. This announcement will be made by NSW Greens MP and lead
Federal Senate Candidate Lee Rhiannon at a Port Stephens public
meeting organised by the Greens for Friday 21st May.
Jan Davis has stood for the Greens at local, state and federal
elections over 15 years. She is a well-known community and
environmental campaigner who has lived in the Hunter for 40 years. Jan
has adult children and grandchildren.
Lee Rhiannon is in the Paterson electorate over the weekend for three
community forums (for more details: http://tiny.cc/fq94p).
Ms Rhiannon said, “Jan Davis has spent thirty years campaigning on the
issues of sustainable development, coal mining and water security.
“Jan is a formidable candidate and a passionate and energetic advocate
for her region,” Ms Rhiannon said.
Ms Davis said, “Many of the issues important to people in Paterson are
central to the Greens as well - climate change and the use of fossil
fuels, wise water use that involves no new dams, and sensible
development, especially along our fragile coastal areas.
“I know from experience that residents are responding well to the
Greens’ work on climate change, our campaigns against the massive coal
expansion in the Hunter and work protecting our fragile environment
from overdevelopment.
“The Greens will continue our support for local residents suffering
noise pollution from the RAAF jets at Williamtown airport. Lee
Rhiannon and I are organising to meet up with affected residents this
weekend.
Jan Davis welcomes the fact that her electorate is examining the
Greens policies more closely for this election.
“This community has high expectations of their elected representatives
and will look at the detail of Greens solutions to the issues they see
as their everyday problems.
“Ensuring vulnerable and isolated communities and fixed income
families have access to services is a Greens priority. We are also
keen to ensure aged residents and carers in our midst have the support
of the Federal Government,” Ms Davis said.
