Federal budget another challenge to NSW public schools
Media release: 11 May 2010
The NSW government must boost public school funding in order to
compensate for the growing bias to non-government education in this
year’s federal budget, according to Greens NSW MP John Kaye.
Dr Kaye said: "Over the next four years, public schools will see their
share of the federal education budget continue to decline and their
funding falling behind non-government schools at an ever increasing
rate.
"Federal Treasurer Wayne Swan has perpetuated the Howard government’s
bias toward the private sector but in this budget, he has put his foot
to the floor.
"Treasurer Sawn expanded non-government schools funding by 34.6 percent
over the next four years, while government schools are left with only a
30.4 percent growth.
"If Federal government funding of public schools had increased at the
same rate they would have been $317 million better off.
"At the very least, NSW Treasurer Eric Roozendaal should find the extra
funds for NSW public schools to make sure they are not further
disadvantaged," Dr Kaye said.
