Greens MP Lee Rhiannon - Media Release - 6 May 2010
Greens seek Macdonald's papers on China Shenhua coal deal
When Parliament resumes next week, NSW Greens MP and mining spokesperson Lee Rhiannon will move to release documents that reveal what deals have been struck between Mining Minister Ian Macdonald and China Shenhua in its talks with the government over the proposed Watermark coal mine (Financial Review and The Land http://tiny.cc/h8l1i ).
"Today China Shenhua put the confusion over where it will mine and whether it has plans for a new power station in the Gunnedah region down to a poor translation," Ms Rhiannon said.
"The Greens hope that securing the release of Mining Minister Ian Macdonald's meeting and file notes, emails and travel diaries will clear up confusion and hopefully allay the legitimate fears of Gunnedah residents.
"Unfortunately the NSW government cannot be trusted to tell the truth about what promises it has made to China's largest coal company.
"It is imperative that we get to the bottom of what deals have been made with China Shenhua which paid $300 million for a license to explore for coal in the Liverpool Plains area," Ms Rhiannon said.
