Media Alert: Greens MP Lee Rhiannon
Calga sandmine protest: Lee Rhiannon speaks tonight
What: Greens MP and mining spokesperson at community protest against proposed sandmine at Calga. Also speaking: Greens Councillor for Gosford City Council Peter Freewater.
When: 7pm, Monday 3 May 2010.
Where: Kariong High School Hall
Lee Rhiannon currently has a motion before Parliament opposing the mine. She worked with the local community to see previously secret papers on the proposal released last month.
Greens MP and mining spokesperson Lee Rhiannon said:
"It is appalling that the Central Coast community is now being forced to fight another round with the NSW Labor government over a proposed sand mine expansion.
"The government should have said 'no' to the idea of this expanded mine right from the start.
"Late last month I received a letter from the Minister for Planning advising me that he was working with Gosford City Council to find a way to rezone the Somersby area to seek a prohibition on future extractive industry.
"The proposed Calga sand mine is the twin of the Somersby mine that Premier Keneally saw fit to quash. It's hard to see what's different about Rocla's plans.
"The Calga mine comes with all the same bad genetic markers as Somersby: destroying water sources, threatening human health and trashing the natural environment.
"The Somersby community had to work for over a decade to finally knock over a sandmine that was going to be located right next door to where they live.
"The Premier should draw a line in the sand, save the Calga community years of battle and call off this mine expansion today," Ms Rhiannon said.
