Greens MLC Colleen Hartland will mark "Equal Pay Day" in Parliament
tomorrow by calling on the state government to make equal pay for women a
condition of all funding and services agreements.
"It is all very well to say you support equal pay for women, but the
government has the means to do something about it. They hold the purse
strings, and agencies report to them," said Colleen Hartland MLC
"The tables of parliament groan with annual reports. I'd like to see an
extra two lines in each report showing how the total budget for wages
breaks down between male and female staff members, and the average wage
for men and women."
"All government funded departments and agencies should be required to
complete an annual pay equity audit. This would cost the government
nothing, and increase transparency."
"I expect to hear a lot of talk from politicians on Equal Pay Day. But
the government could support equal pay with the stroke of a pen, by
telling every single agency to show them whether government funding was
used to support equal pay for women."
"It's 2009, but despite many years of equal opportunity laws, women still
continue to have lower incomes than men, spend more on services, have less
job security, and suffer from sexual harassment. In addition, there are
fewer women than men in key decision making positions," said Ms Hartland.
