The Tasmanian Greens today congratulated all schools and organisations
involved in this year's Science Week (15 August - 23 August), as well as
Devonport's Imaginarium science centre which featured prominently during
the Week and which experienced capacity attendance at all its events.
Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said popularity of science in the classroom
is currently declining and science educators are desperately trying to
attract and retain students, so events such as Science Week and
facilities such as the Imaginarium must be encouraged and maintained.
Mr McKim also called on the Premier and Education Minister David
Bartlett to investigate all options to secure the long-term future of
the Imaginarium, which is currently facing closure due to the financial
constraints being faced by its sponsor, the Devonport City Council.
"This year's Science Week was an outstanding success and I would like to
congratulate all those involved in lifting the profile of science and
making the subject a more attractive option for students," said Mr
McKim.
"During Science Week, Devonport's Imaginarium science centre played a
leading role and attracted capacity audiences to every event it hosted."
"The Imaginarium has proven itself as a highly successful facility that
attracts and encourages students interested in furthering their
scientific studies. At a time when interest in science is declining, the
Imaginarium is a beacon of hope for science educators."
"David Bartlett must stop ignoring the looming fate of the Imaginarium,
and start investigating all options to secure its future in Devonport,
including the quarantining of any proceeds from the sale of the
Devonport Airport, should that be deemed appropriate to proceed," said
Mr McKim.
