The Tasmanian Greens today called on the Bartlett Government to reveal
what it has done about the detection of a cocktail of toxic agricultural
chemicals in the Coal River Valley last month.
Greens Water spokesperson Tim Morris MP said the poisonous chemicals
Hexazinone, Simazine, Pirimicarb, Boscalid and Metaxyl were all detected
in the Coal River Valley on 21 July this year, and action must be taken
to prevent these chemicals from poisoning residents, and from running
into the extensive oyster farming operations in Barilla Bay.
"A toxic cocktail of agricultural chemicals was detected in the Coal
River Valley last month and I am calling on the Bartlett Government to
reveal what it has done since to ensure that these chemicals are not
harming the health of Coal River Valley residents, and are not flowing
onto the oyster farming operations in Barilla Bay," said Mr Morris.
"Oysters are filter feeders and are well-known for their sensitivity to
toxic chemicals in the water - if these agricultural chemical detections
continue it is likely that the oyster farmers of Barilla Bay will see
mass die-offs, as have occurred in other oyster-growing areas that are
downstream from agricultural chemical contamination."
"This toxic cocktail of chemicals was detected over four weeks ago and
the Bartlett Government must now reveal where the poisons came from, and
what it is doing to protect the health of the residents and other
businesses in the region," said Mr Morris.
