The Rudd government's go-ahead for the Gorgon development on the
century-old A-class nature reserve of Barrow Island is a hallmark of its
environmental negligence, Australian Greens Leader Bob Brown said today.
"More than 20 endangered species are on the 202 square kilometre island.
The Minister for the Environment, who today described himself as a
'regulator', has been co-opted by Prime Minister Rudd. It's as if the
Howard government was still in office."
"Next will be the Rudd government's approval of Gunns' polluting pulp
mill in the Tamar Valley, which will destroy thousands of hectares of
native forests and endangered species habitat," Senator Brown said.
