Govt must insist on strict Roxby rules - Greens

Greens MLC, Mark Parnell today called on the Government to match its words on the Olympic Dam expansion with real action to protect public health and the environment.

Comments from the Treasurer and others in relation to the Government's official submission to the EIS process shows that they are locked into the project going ahead, which makes it very difficult for them to attach strong environmental conditions which will make the project more expensive.

"Environmental protection and rehabilitation costs money. No amount of empty claims and vague commitments will get around that. BHP Billiton will only do the right thing if the Rann Government is prepared to insist on strict and enforceable environmental standards." said Mark Parnell.

"The Rann Government has realised what just about everyone else who has the read the 4,600 pages of the Roxby EIS has: despite its massive size, there are extraordinary gaps, flaws and inconsistencies in the document.

"BHP Billiton has written their EIS like an a la carte menu, with many options canvassed, but few commitments made.

"The Rann Government has already been rolled over the 'China Option', with many of the jobs and downstream economic benefits set to go off shore.

"South Australians cannot afford for the Government to roll over again when it comes to protecting South Australia's environment and public health.

"The big question is: does the Rann Government have the courage to stand strong and stick to stringent environmental standards, even if BHP Billiton threaten to walk away?" he said.
