The Tasmanian Greens have urged Premier David Bartlett to intervene
immediately in the Sotheby's auction in Melbourne tonight of two
Aboriginal busts.

Greens Leader Nick McKim MP said that Mr Bartlett has a small window of
opportunity to act on behalf of the Tasmanian Aboriginal people by the
State purchasing the two busts and then returning them to their
community.

"This is an urgent and heart-felt plea to Premier David Bartlett to
intervene in tonight's auction of the busts of Truganini and Woureddy,
even if it means the State purchases them and returns them to the
Tasmanian Aboriginal community," Mr McKim said.

"Such an act by Premier Bartlett would indeed be informed, connected and
inclusive, and would be a tangible move that helps assist healing the
divide."

"The Greens reiterate our position that the Federal government should
also contribute to the purchase costs, but due to the current urgent
situation we need David Bartlett to show leadership, get the ball
rolling now, and obtain a commitment from Kevin Rudd that he will
reimburse the State the Commonwealth's share."
