Greens Senator Hanson-Young holding doorstop press conference announcing
Greens' amendments to Govt's Youth Allowance changes

WHAT:
Senator Sarah Hanson-Young will announce Greens amendments to the
Federal Government's proposed changes to Youth Allowance eligibility:
- amending the cut-off date to January 1, 2011 to accommodate current
gap year students working towards qualifying as independent via the work
eligibility criteria
- creating a new eligibility criterion to accommodate geographically
disadvantaged students, who can adequately prove to Centrelink that they
have had to move out of their family home to go to university or TAFE

Education Minister Julia Gillard is holding a roundtable meeting with a
selection of students who are concerned about the Youth Allowance
changes today in Canberra.

The current Senate Inquiry into Rural and Regional Access to Secondary
and Tertiary Education Opportunities was moved for by Senators
Hanson-Young and Nash in June.
