MEDIA ALERT / PHOTO OP -
Senate Inquiry Meets Big Pile of Rubbish
National Container Deposit Scheme comes one step closer

WHEN: Monday 24 August, 9.30am-11am

WHAT: Thousands of bottles and cans dumped at entrance to Senate
Committee Inquiry hearings in Melbourne re 10c deposit on bottles, cans
and cartons.

WHO: Senator Scott Ludlam (Greens, WA), Colleen Hartland MLC (Greens,
Vic). Cans and bottles provided by community group AFROCAB (Australians
For Refunds On Cans And Bottles).

WHERE: St James Conference Centre, 12 Batman Street West Melbourne (off
King Street, near Flagstaff Gardens).

WHY: A National Container Deposit Scheme will create 2,600 new green
jobs, raise up to $90 million a year and recycle 740,000 tonnes of
waste.

With the Federal Government still dragging its' feet, the Greens have
introduced a bill to recycle the 10 billion drinks containers
Australians throw away each year through a 10c returnable deposit on all
drink bottles, cans and cartons.

On Monday August 24 a Senate Committee will convene in Melbourne to hear
evidence for and against the scheme.

"This bill is based on the scheme drawn up by Greens MLC Colleen
Hartland. If adopted nationally, it will save 1.3 million tonnes of
greenhouse gas emissions a year and is the perfect complement to
kerbside recycling," said Senator Ludlam.

Photos of the event will be available on request from Ms Hartland's
office from 10am.
