The Tasmanian Greens today said that it is fantastic news that the 400
Vodafone jobs have been saved but have called on the Premier, David
Bartlett, to detail the amount of public money involved in the deal.
Greens Leader and Member for Franklin Nick McKim MP said that once again
this situation highlights the need for the State government to release a
strategic plan detailing how financial assistance to the private sector
is determined and funded.
"It is fantastic news that the 400 Vodafone jobs have been saved but the
public deserves to know the exact cost to the taxpayer, information
which has not yet been released by the Premier," Mr McKim said.
"Regional jobs are extremely important and we are very pleased that
Vodafone has made today's announcement however the Bartlett government
must be up front as to how much it has cost the Tasmanian taxpayer to
secure this deal."
"It is surprising that Mr Bartlett has not released the costings of this
deal today, which is fair to expect from a Premier who is marketing
himself as transparent and accountable."
"The Greens have long called for the government to release a strategy
which would outline a framework within which it can be determined which
companies would be provided financial assistance and which ones would
not, as we believe that such a strategy is a clear and core requirement
of responsible government."
