The Tasmanian Greens today called on the State Government to commit to
funding a dedicated sex worker support service, extending the interim
service in place until November 2009, or risk leaving Tasmania as the
only State without a specialised support organisation.

Greens Justice spokesperson Nick McKim MP said that Tasmania is the only
Australian state that has not committed to funding a dedicated sex
worker service to improve the protection and health and welfare of sex
workers, and he welcomed today's community forum organised by Scarlet
Alliance to discuss these important issues.

"Sex workers have as much right to a safe workplace as any other
Tasmanian worker, and funding a peak body would be a great step towards
this outcome," Mr McKim said.

"Scarlet Alliance, the Australian Sex Workers Association, engages in
important work raising awareness about equality and discrimination and
providing support for the health and welfare of sex workers, yet the
Tasmanian Government has failed to ensure funding for the continuation
of a specialised service in this State."

"Tasmanian sex workers continue to face discrimination through reduced
access to a specialised support service, and information about the needs
of sex workers, industry trends, and the impact of legislation and
Government policies will go largely undocumented."

"Today's community forum is a great opportunity for stakeholders to
discuss important issues regarding service provision for Tasmania's sex
workers."

"I would have liked to attend the forum, but due to Parliament am unable
to do so."
