The Tasmanian Greens today welcomed the commitment that they received
from the Parks Minister, Michelle O'Byrne, that funding would be made
immediately available for the restoration of the Coles Bay jetty to be
completed this summer.

Greens Member for Lyons, Tim Morris MP, who had pursued the Minister
over the lack of immediate funding for restoration works, said that
despite the jetty being allowed to deteriorate for years, suddenly the
Government is prepared to prioritise the issue in the countdown to an
election.

"Until I put the specific question to the Minister during Parliamentary
debate today to commit to making the necessary funding immediately
available, Ms O'Byrne had only committed to getting the design work done
and had avoided the funding question, leaving open the possibility that
action would stall on paper yet again," Mr Morris said.

"The deterioration of the Coles Bay jetty should never have been allowed
to get to this point, and that responsibility falls squarely into the
lap of the Labor government."

"The Labor government has known for years about the desperate need for
repair and restoration but has chosen to not do anything about it, until
now."

"Labor has repeatedly not funded Parks and Wildlife sufficiently or
provided a specific allocation to enable the jetty to be maintained in a
proper and safe state, but hopefully the funding commitment won by the
Greens will ensure that remedial action occurs promptly."
