The Tasmanian Greens today have called for the Bartlett government to
guarantee that it will not bring on for debate the Land Use Planning and
Approvals Amendment (State and Regional Strategies) Bill 2009, tabled
today, until stakeholders have been consulted by non-government parties.

Greens Leader and Planning spokesperson Nick McKim MP said that the
legislation seeks to introduce Projects of Regional Significance, a move
which had parked much controversy amongst Local Councils and other
stakeholders when first flagged by the government, and warrants further
consultation to check that serious concerns have been resolved.

"The Minister tabled a lengthy and complex amendment bill today, and the
Greens are seeking a guarantee that this legislation will not be rammed
through the Parliament this week, as we believe it must be consulted out
with stakeholders to ensure a proper and informed debate," Mr McKim
said.

"Labor's plans to introduce Projects of Regional Significance caused
much controversy at the local government level, and we need sufficient
time to consult with Councils and other stakeholders over the impacts of
this Bill."

"We share concerns, voiced by many Councils, that the Bill gives the
government too many powers to call in projects. We are considering
amendments to give Councils more of a say."
